A  tabletop wargame set in a post-apocalyptic world of car combat

A world where only fragmented memories of the before time remained and men like Mad Max
roamed the wastes, ever weary and always trying to stay one step ahead of the buzzards and the ghosts. A world where ammo
is scarce when it works, fuel is a commodity to kill for, life is cheap and worth less than a bullet unless you’re the boss of a
gang, and vehicles are chariots of war, built by twisted minds for a sinister purpose. It is a world where men and women lead
savage bands of thugs and human monsters while the few remaining good people try to eke out an existence as merchants or
simply in small villages or bustling trading towns, always on the watch for the attack that is inevitable and inescapable for
human life is meaningless except to serve as a tool for acquiring resources for a greater purpose: a warlord’s greed.

Those who were left tried to form some semblance of civilization and even succeeded for a few years. But ultimately,
corruption and evil will always win over civilization and the towns fell to the warlords and the gangs
.

Blood and rust Interview

How long have you been playing table top games?

I've been playing with blood and rust for about 2 years. I'm no stranger to gaming. I've been playing tabletop War Games since I was 11 years old so about 25 years now. More than anything for me it was games like gorkamorka and Necromunda battles in the ash wastes that really hit home

and how long has it taken you to develop blood and rust?

About 2 years from conception to where we're at now. The part that has taken the longest is being able to get Capital together to get Miniatures done. I don't want anything shown on the Kickstarter that I don't already have a physical copy of. I don't do 3D renders or concept art. People should see what they are buying. There are currently two of us working on this in-house with my wife and myself. I'm the author and Lead play tester she's the assistant playtester and the financier. I've also had a number of volunteer playtesters put themselves and their group's time into helping us. The groups that did the heavy lifting will be getting a free copy of the rules. Additionally, I have a man who is an excellent graphic designer who is working in his spare time to help me get this as polished as possible. He's currently working on a volunteer status because he just wants to see it succeed but at the very least he will also be getting a free copy of the rules. I have a cover artist 3D Sculptor working on the cars and a traditional sculptor working on the miniatures.

Can I buy the game now? or is it going for kick-starter funding soon?

Well, the game was available on wargame vault in for about a year but now that the beta is closed it will be available next year and both finalized PDF and hardback via Kickstarter. We are also looking to have a range of Miniatures although the intent behind the game has always been for it to be Miniatures neutral so that people can use whatever they want.

Is this the first game you designed?

This is the first one I have ever developed for publication. I have an entire binder full of home-brewed games and rules supplements for existing games plus I have helped do playtest for several companies.

What made you want to take blood and rust to the market?

Well, frankly the reason I want to take it to Market is the very reason that I started writing it. There are a lot of really fun car combat games in 10 to 20 millimeter. There's a lot of really great skirmish games and 25 to 30 to millimeter. But I didn't really feel that there were any out there that captured the essence of the movies and video games set in the Mad Max universe so to speak. Either the vehicles are always too high tech or focus too little on the vehicles. In the movies and the video game vehicles are life. There are several games that bring vehicles into existing rule sets But ultimately the focus is too narrow. It's still mostly about the footslogging warbands who happened to have vehicles

For all us casual gamers and noobies to hobby games how the hell do you get a game testing job?

As for how to become a playtester? I'm really not sure. LOL. I wish I could be more specific but basically, I just happened to be a member of forums for certain games and when they put out calls for Alpha Beta and playtesting crew I responded and was chosen for several. Now it's not a pain kick usually. Lord knows I wish it was LOL. But know sometimes you get free stuff out of it which is neat I mean, for example, I've done a decent amount of work with supplements for this is not a test by Joseph McGuire of worlds in publishing. Happens to be one of my favorite skirmish games. He just asked people wanted to help and I volunteered. As for some other things I've helped playtest for modiphius

what scale are cars and miniatures in your game and what will be in the core set and will there be any new supplements for the game soon?

When I wrote Blood and rust and play tested it revolves around using 28 mm scale figures. Although some of them very and scale because I just picked up whatever I liked for the game since it was intended to be Miniatures neutral. The vehicles are predominantly 1/43 to 1/50 Scale Diecast and plastic model kits
But that was another reason I wanted to make the game because there's not a whole lot of car combat games in this scale. And I knew I wouldn't be trying to cut the legs out from under several games I really like such as Devils run
The game will include two cars, two big dogs which are the bosses of parties, 2 dogs, 4 bikes, 4 matching dismounted bikers, the hardback rules, the quickstart rules, & 5 d10. And a trike and expanded biker gang rules will be coming in their own supplement probably the end of next year or early 2021 as I am fleshing them out to be a more unique party  One thing to keep in mind about blood and rust is that guns are very rare because I made them very powerful. They automatically knock people prone even if they don't injure. I wanted it to represent them being a status symbol of the very powerful and Rich Warlords so only the people that they liked best were issued guns. But that being said machine guns are coming in a future supplement. They will just be very expensive and very unreliable

How far are you from finishing the development of the game at the moment, and what are your plans to fund blood and rust on Kickstarter?

The rulebook is finished and is in final copy editing and with my graphic designer right now to get beautified. The cover art is due for completion anytime now by my artist. The quick-start rules will go out this fall to various Outlets such as miniwargaming, must contain minis, beasts of war, Guerrilla Miniatures games, WarGames Illustrated, etc.

I am commissioning for the first run two cars and two big dogs which are heroic characters that lead parties either by choice or just by necessity. I'm also in negotiations to have a pair of bikers both mounted and dismounted with several weapons and head options so that they can be basically several different models when you take into account the heads and arms.

I'm planning for the Kickstarter to run next summer. There will be a rulebook only tier. There will also be a 2 player starter set if all goes well-containing rules & all the above miniatures plus a pair of dog miniatures & 5 d10s. Add ons are looking like they will consist of a 4x6 mat, the models, a token & template set, & a card deck expansion which brings in more chaos & mayhem
The artwork for the card deck and the tokens and templates is already finalized. I have about finished the quick-start rules and plan to have them ready by the end of September. I already know the costs of casting and the costs for everything in terms of production. So basically all I'm waiting on are things to actually get finished and get them in hand so that I can verify that they are what they are supposed to be before I launch a Kickstarter. I don't want to promise pie-in-the-sky to people. I want to be able to show the production level of everything that they are going to be purchasing

Is there any car you would really like a kitbash at for your own personal gang

I'll keep wanting to work on a Mini Cooper model for blood and rust. It would be good for a buggy. The biggest problem I run into is it's not an easy car to find in the right scale. I find them frequently in the grocery store but they are more like 125th scale

what would your dream car  be in the post apocalyptics world

Dream car -
81 F250 4x4 with 451. Raised about 6" with super swampers filled with that goo we put in ATV tires. Extended cab. Work rack on the bed. Weld the doors shut, replace the glass with metal plates & grating. Cut a hatch in the roof, install a cupola. Fully enclose the bed with a cargo hatch up top. Warn winch. Harpoon gun up top attached to a secondary winch from an ATV. No. I haven't really thought about this much.

  what's your favorite post-apocalyptic film?

Favorite film... that's very difficult... probably the Book of Eli just because of that massive plot twist. Although if anyone has ever seen a braille Bible there's no way he could ever carry one around. I saw one once. Each book of the Bible in braille is the size of one of those huge heirloom "family Bibles" so many families from the old world have lol.

What three things could you not live without, in the post-apocalyptic world?

What couldn't I do without... coffee and hot sauce. I can find a way to make most other things
